Resilience Thinking Walkscape in Barcelona: Exploring SETS Dynamics Through Holling’s Adaptive Cycle and Panarchy
This walking and workshop experiential learning activity is designed to explore the dynamics of Barcelona’s Social-Ecological-Technological Systems (SETS) using the concepts of Holling's Adaptive Cycle and Panarchy.
This guided walkscape delves into the evolution of SETS in the city from the 1980s to 2025. Barcelona, a city celebrated for its rich ecological environment and innovative urban planning, offers a unique lens through which to explore resilience thinking.
Meeting point: Biblioteca Joan Miró, c/ de Vilamarí, 61, 08015 Barcelona.
Using the Holling Adaptive Cycle and Panarchy frameworks, participants will collaborate in a participatory activity and action in order to gain a nuanced understanding of how the city has navigated cycles of growth, collapse and renewal, and how these cycles have shaped its dynamics. The walk will be structured around key locations representing Barcelona’s SETS dynamics, offering participants an immersive experience in understanding the interplay between ecological, social and technological transformations. Participants will explore urban spaces and local communities while engaging in discussions on resilience, sustainability and governance.
Those who take part in this walk will understand the application of the Holling Adaptive cycle in analysing urban resilience, recognise the interconnectedness of systems and gain insights into current Barcelona’s multi-systemics challenges in respect of future changes.
